Even Pro’s Get An 8 Shot Hole!…Dustin Johnson Shows Frustration At the Byron Nelson

Us amateur golfers do seem to take delight in a Pro golfer having a bad ‘day at the office’!

One it makes us feel a little bit better about our own golf failings and Two it proves that this great game is a great leveller whatever a player’s standard – Pro’s are the best of the best but it’s difficult not to feel a little schadenfreunde too.

Dustin Johnson at the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament hit his first tee shot out of bounds, re-loaded only to pull his third shot to the left – how many times have we all done that over compensating for a first out of bounds shot to the right?!!

Johnson’s ball landed in knee high rough and that is where the trouble really got BAD as you can see in this video…


Dustin eventually got down in 8! of course we would have just recorded a blob and just moved in simmering with a good session of ‘golf anger’ about what we had just done.

Pro’s have a remarkable ability to ‘shut out’ holes like this and there is a reason. They use their trained golf brain.

You Can do It too….

That is something that all of us amateur golfers need to think about otherwise we can say goodbye to playing better golf and achieving lower scores. A clear calm mind is THE key to being a better golfer and to not cursing on the tee and throwing those clubs of yours in disgust!

Mental Issues KILL McIlroy’s PGA Wentworth Defence

Rory McIlroy the world’s number one golfer and defending PGA Champion at Wentworth admitted that he lost his mind a little and paid a heavy price at this years tournament.

A poor first round was put down to mental fatigue – yes, even the very best can suffer in the pursuit of perfection and winning in the game that we all love.

The last time Rory McIlroy lost his mental focus and failed miserably at ‘anger management’ was at a tournament on the US Tour in Miami earlier this year where he tossed a three-iron into a lake. Great distance but not with the golf ball!

This week there were quite a few occasions where Rory’s inner demons began to surface again. Of his own admission he said “On some holes, I was in danger of turning into Mr Angry.” 

No doubt Nike’s replacement club team were on stand by again as he suffered severe anger management failure.

‘It’s what happens when I’m a little mentally fatigued,’ said the 26-year-old.

‘I start to get down on myself and try too hard. Fortunately, I’ve been around long enough to recognise the signs.’

Not long enough, however, to prevent a three-wood from being discarded dismissively after a poor second shot at the par-five 17th. But McIlroy was able to curb the tantrum temptation and post a 71 that appeared to do him no harm.

Day 2 Hell For Rory

The second round just proved all too much for McIlroy who now has to start getting mentally in shape for the big prizes to come in the next few weeks – The US Open and The Open at the home of Golf St Andrews.

He won in the US and then missed the cut in the 2015 Irish Open on a course he knows really well. Even the best get stifled by the great game of golf.

At The Open at St Andrews in July he defends his title and one thing is for sure the R & A may not take too kindly to club throwing and tantrums.

For you this kind of behaviour and failure may raise as smile because it involves a very high profile golfer like Rory McIlroy BUT this is the kind of off focus wayward golf you can play or see at golf club’s all over the week everyday of the week.

Stop Snoring And Your Mind Helps You Play Better Golf….Here’s The PROOF

Never did we think we would be sharing with the Five Inch Golf Course Dot Com readers a set of new findings that have found a solid link between not snoring and playing better golf by using a refreshed mind.

But we have! We are not crazy read on…

Scientists have discovered that a treatment for heavy snorers – wearing a mask at night – can have a significant effect on playing better golf.

Have You ever Heard Of CPAP?

CPAP is a snoring therapy ‘Continuous Positive Airway Pressure’ that significantly reduces the causes and effects of heavy snoring. The study found that men who underwent snoring therapy significantly improves their golf game. and in particular driving and putting.

Around 30% of golfers also experienced a lowering of their handicap.

CPAP therapy made the men’s ‘golf brain’ benefit from much more uninterrupted sleep and quality sleep enabling golfers to concentrate more on their game as they were much more alert.

So, it appears that sleep apnoea (snoring ) can have a negative effect on playing golf. This is how it works…

It’s an Airway Muscle Problem….

In severe cases when sleep begins the airway muscles relax and drop down towards the tongue. A sleep apnoea sufferer can experience difficulties breathing of up to 10 seconds at a time.

Snoring happens as air vibrates against the soft tissue leading to the noise that we would recognise as a ‘snore’. The brain then signals to the airway muscles to relax and contract once it detects that breathing has stopped for a few seconds.

Consequently, the airway opens up and the snorer wakes up and suffers interrupted sleep.

Study Findings Once The Snoring Stopped…..

The golf improvement aspect of the study were VERY interesting.

Heavy snorers who wore a CPAP mask saw a drop in just over 11% in their handicap. Lower handicapper’s saw an improvement of 31% in their scores.

Professor Jim Horne of the University of Loughborough says that increased daytime alertness is probably the key to improved golf performance. The report was published by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine who concluded in their findings :

 ‘ Golf is a sport that requires a range of cognitive skills. Treatment for sleep apnoea with continuous positive airway pressure enhanced performance in golfer’s with the condition’

Using a CPAP therapy mask helped many golfer’s to play better and enjoy their game apart from the health benefits of not putting their bodies through strain as a result of snoring.

Which Golfer Went From Word Number 3 to 371 And Turned To A Chimp for Help?
